This sculpture tells the story of the Viking Norse on their heroic quest to find new land. This journey took them from their homelands in Scandinavia to the shores of England, Scotland, Ireland and the northern islands. Their journey continued on to Iceland, Greenland and mainland North America. The sea mammals and polar bear represent the animals they hunted for food, fur, leather and ivory. The churning and intertwining waves with decorative motifs spilling onto the gunwhales and deck of the boat represent their material culture and spiritual beliefs.
