This sculpture of white alabaster and soapstone depicts a shaman who has taken on the form of a bear (nonuk). He has become his spirit familiar (spirit helper) through trance induced dance or spirit communion. The polar bear represents the power of the shaman and also the bear as the most powerful of the animal spirits.
