My Grandfathers name was Ruben Anghik. He was born in Noatak Alaska in the late 1800’s. He traveled with his parents and siblings by whaling ship from Alaska to the Western Arctic at the turn of the last century. As his children became older and were able to hunt and fish, he taught them how to build log cabins, basket sleds and hunting and fishing gear in the Alaskan style. He passed away in 1956. A few days before he passed away, I was witness to his last will and testament. He gathered his sons, including my father, and told them of his vision of the past, present and future; and of the changes that would take place and the timing necessary to adapt and survive the changes that would take place against our people. I was five years old when I was witness to this.
