When the Vikings came as colonists to Iceland, Greenland, Baffin Island and Newfoundland, they brought with them all the hopes and fears of coming to a new land. When they settled into their new found homes, they gave names to the mountains, valleys, streams and bays, and to places that gave them refuge: land and waters that would provide sustenance. In their way, they sought to give reverence to the guardian spirits of the place. This practice is still alive in Iceland.
