To the Viking warrior, an honourable death on the battlefield was always on his mind, because he believed it gave him entry into Valhalla. Valhalla was a place where fallen warriors, who fought in a battlefield of honor, were born again to feast in its halls. The Valkyrie were charged to bring the honoured fallen to Valhalla (the house of Odin). It must be understood that amongst the pantheons of gods and goddesses, Freya had first choice of the fallen warriors above Odin.
