Irish monasteries and abbeys served as theological centers as well as literary and artistic workshops. Renowned as scribes and illustrators, Irish monks also ventured out as evangelists to spread the Gospels. Here the artist recalls the itinerant life of a Celtic monk, shown with his walking staff and manuscripts in hand. Using the memory of his father’s face as a model, the sculptor depicts an aged figure, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge.
